Marholmen, Sweden

During the Höstlov break we decided that we wanted to explore some more of Sweden. We were already heading down to Norrtälje, a large town north east of Stockholm, to see an old colleague in their new home and so Marholmen was the perfect extra night.

An hour drive from Arlanda airport, Marholmen is a unique hotel resort which provides a range of different accommodation options on the coast of the mainland facing the north of Stockholm’s archipelago. They offer hotel rooms, stugas, glamping tents and villas with access to a range of activities such as football, volleyball, tennis, adventure golf and an outdoor playground. In the summer there is also archery and canoeing on offer.

There is the 7o Bad and Bastu which consists of two saunas overlooking the water with access to the sea water to cool off in, if wanted.

There is also a set of four outdoor heated tubs for you to enjoy. It was an incredibly relaxing space which never felt overcrowded due to the booking requirements. We really enjoyed having a drink in our empty sauna watching the sun go down.

The package we booked included a three course meal and a breakfast buffet which were both served in the Strandpaviljongen restaurant which also overlooked the water’s edge.

The delicious three course meal was pre-set as follows:

Starter: Fired Scallops with tomato vinaigrette, cream cheese, pickled and fried Jerusalem artichoke

Main: Pepper fried sirloin steak with crispy chicken skin, parsley & potato puree, broccoli and port wine sauce

Dessert: Apple & almond cake with Vanilla cream, maple syrup flavored with browned butter and ginger

Our stay at Marholmen was short but sweet. The resort itself is quite extensive but the staff approach every interaction with the intimacy of a family run bed and breakfast. The way the reception staff interacted with the children alone during the Halloween weekend was so endearing and made me want to return again when the weather gets warmer.

If you want somewhere with plenty to do, within close proximity to Stockholm or the airport with beautiful views over the water then this place is definitely for you.

I cannot wait for my next visit. Until then…
